Plan for the water and the distance from hospital care
The Gili Islands cannot be given a blanket safe or unsafe label. The decisions that matter are where you enter the water, the boat you board, what you drink and how you would get medical help. Meno’s quieter evenings do not remove sea or medical-access risks, and a busy Trawangan beach is not evidence of supervised swimming.
For a first visit, choose water activities around your actual swimming ability, keep a land-based alternative, and carry insurance that covers your planned activities and medical evacuation. This guide does not certify any beach, operator or traveller as safe.
FCDO: Indonesia safety and securitySwimming and snorkelling: a named beach is not a safety rating
Manta Dive on Trawangan explicitly warns that not everywhere is suitable for snorkelling because tidal currents can be strong. Its nearby-reef descriptions do not establish a safe entry, exit or tide window for your day. Get a local assessment of the specific site before entering, rather than choosing by a turtle photograph or a map pin alone.
Do not plan to swim between Trawangan, Meno and Air. Use a passenger boat for inter-island travel. For a snorkelling booking, establish who supervises people in the water, how the boat retrieves them, whether a non-swimmer can participate and whether a properly fitting buoyancy aid is provided. Included equipment is not evidence of individual suitability. If those answers do not fit your group, choose a different activity.
Keep away from boat boarding and manoeuvring areas. A harbour arrival point is not interchangeable with a swimming entry. Nest’s location off Meno and Turtle Point’s name identify places to discuss with a guide, not guaranteed conditions, wildlife sightings or rescue cover.
Manta Dive: snorkelling and tidal-current warningBefore boarding: inspect the equipment, not just the ticket
FCDO warns that Indonesian boat safety standards vary, vessels can be crowded and sea conditions can change quickly. Before boarding, locate the life jackets and establish that there is a suitable one for every passenger. Child-sized jackets are not always available; do not assume an adult jacket fits an infant or child.
Avoid an overloaded boat or a journey whose equipment you cannot establish. FCDO advises avoiding travel after dark unless satisfied the vessel is suitably equipped. A private speedboat is not automatically a safer product than a shared service, and paying more does not remove weather risk.
Keep essential medication, your phone and travel documents accessible and protected from water. Leave flexibility before an inflexible flight: returning to mainland Lombok or Bali the previous day removes one same-day boat dependency, but does not guarantee travel during prolonged disruption.
FCDO: Indonesia safety and securityAlcohol, drink spiking and nights out
FCDO specifically records drink-spiking reports linked to sexual assault in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands. Watch drinks being prepared, do not leave them unattended and do not accept drinks from strangers at parties. Arrange the return to your accommodation before going out; avoid poorly lit areas and do not leave an impaired travelling companion alone.
Methanol poisoning is a separate risk. FCDO reports deaths and serious illness from contaminated alcohol in Indonesia, including drinks bought in licensed venues and counterfeit branded products. You cannot identify methanol by taste or smell. A familiar label or a hotel bar is not a guarantee.
Seek urgent medical help if poisoning is suspected after drinking. Do not wait to see whether serious symptoms pass as a hangover. Use the official Travel Aware guidance for warning signs and risk reduction rather than relying on a taste test or home treatment.

Medical help: call promptly and establish the onward plan
The clinic addresses and numbers above come from Blue Island Clinic’s own directory, checked on 25 October 2026. Its listed 24-hour helpline is +62 81 999 795 706. These are published contacts, not test-called response times or an independent assessment of treatment capacity. Save the directory before arrival and have your accommodation identify the actual clinic location on your island.
FCDO lists 118 as Indonesia’s ambulance number. In an island emergency, seek immediate help from nearby staff as well as contacting medical services; this national number is not a promise that a road ambulance can reach an island beach. Give the island, exact location and a callback number.
An island clinic is not evidence of hospital, surgery or hyperbaric-chamber availability. FCDO warns that serious illness or injury may require evacuation and substantial payment. Contact your insurer promptly when referred for treatment, but do not delay urgent medical care while sorting administration. Keep policy and emergency-assistance details available offline.
Blue Island Clinic: island addresses and telephone numbersHealth preparation and scuba cover
FCDO advises checking travel-health recommendations at least eight weeks before travel where possible. Discuss relevant vaccines, mosquito-borne disease precautions, existing conditions and medication with a qualified clinician. Do not drink tap water; the national health advice identifies it as unsafe. An animal bite or scratch needs immediate medical assessment.
For scuba, FCDO recommends checking credentials, boat oxygen, insurance and the ability to transfer a diver to a hyperbaric chamber. Ask about the actual evacuation destination and procedure, not simply whether the centre has an emergency plan. Course inclusion or certification does not prove your own insurance covers a claim.
Diving also constrains later flying and mountain travel. Do not turn a short Gili holiday into a next-morning Rinjani ascent by applying a generic flight interval. The extension guide explains why the actual dive and altitude profile need qualified advice.

Carry only the valuables needed for the outing, protect cards and travel documents, and keep your card in sight during payment. FCDO warns of credit-card fraud and fake ATM assistance numbers. Do not give card details to a number pasted on a machine.
At check-in, establish how your accommodation communicates local severe-weather, earthquake and tsunami instructions. Follow official warnings and local evacuation directions rather than waiting for a travel website to update. The national advice links BMKG weather and warning information. No island-wide rescue response time or safe evacuation location is certified here.
