Gili Islands to Rinjani: transfers, trek order and current restrictions

Plan the boat and road legs to Rinjani, distinguish Senaru from Sembalun, and account for park restrictions, preparation nights and diving-related altitude risk.

From the Gilis, cross to Lombok before heading to the trek base

To travel from Gili Trawangan, Air or Meno to Rinjani, take the confirmed boat to mainland Lombok, then a road transfer to the base named by your trekking organiser. Bangsal is a common mainland meeting point. Senaru and Sembalun are different villages; your organiser’s office, pre-trek hotel, trail entrance and eventual exit do not have to be in the same place.

Do not book a boat arrival as though it were the start of a mountain walk. Use a separate preparation day and establish the permitted route before committing to the island-to-mountain transfer. Current park restrictions below take precedence over an operator’s open label or a standard three-day sales itinerary.

Current restrictions: do not assume a Senaru or Torean trek is operating

The national park’s 30 September 2026 fire update says both Torean and Senaru remain temporarily closed as trekking entrances and exits until a further decision. It explains that reopening depends on trail assessment, ground stability, falling-tree risks and burnt material, not just extinguishing the fire. No later reopening notice was found in the official material checked on 25 October.

This differs from Green Rinjani’s current route panel, which labels several Senaru combinations open while marking Torean combinations closed. Do not use that panel to override the later dated park notice. Senaru village accommodation and a car to the village are not proof that the mountain gate is open.

For a proposed Sembalun return trek, obtain current park authorisation and an actual date-specific ticket before making non-refundable connections. The Senaru/Torean closure does not itself certify that every other route or summit objective is available.

Booking is a separate constraint from reaching Lombok

The park’s 1 September 2026 restricted-opening notice says new online eRinjani bookings were temporarily suspended until fire risk was considered safe for reopening. Bookings paid before that date could still be served under applicable rules. A generic operator booking form does not establish that a new permit can now be issued.

Before paying, require the organiser to identify the current park decision allowing your route and date, the ticket/booking reference, the named entrance and exit, and what happens to your payment if authorisation is not available. Follow the park’s own website and contact details for the issuing authority. Do not send money to an unofficial app or a copied permit link on the strength of its name.

The park also published a closure for 1 January–31 March 2026. That is a dated past closure, not proof of the 2027 calendar. An April–December seasonal description cannot settle a current fire restriction.

Your decisionWhat it is forConnection detail
Senaru villageA northern accommodation/organiser base, and a possible trek entrance or exit only when permitted.Green Rinjani sells Bangsal–Senaru car transfers. Its page conflicts on duration: 1.5 hours in cards, approximately 3 hours in the body. Do not promise the shorter figure.
Sembalun villageAn eastern mountain base used by summit-focused programmes. It is not the same pickup as Senaru.Green Rinjani’s general transport page gives 2.5–3.5 hours from Bangsal; its direct-product page says about 2.5 hours, or 5–6 with a Senaru waterfall stop.
The booked private jettyAn alternative to Bangsal when the boat/car package names an exact landing.Send that landing to the driver. A Teluk Nare arrival is not a Bangsal pickup, and neither vehicle drives to an island hotel.

Transfer costs: car-only examples, not a trek package

Green Rinjani’s Bangsal–Senaru page lists a Toyota Innova for one to four passengers at IDR 500,000 per vehicle one way, with driver, fuel and parking in its table. Its Bangsal–Sembalun product lists an Innova for one to four at IDR 700,000 per vehicle one way. These published examples were checked on 25 October 2026; they are not all-supplier tariffs or date-specific availability.

Neither car amount includes an island passenger ticket or a Rinjani trekking programme merely because the journey is heading toward the mountain. For a private island boat, establish whether the boat total is additional and where it lands. For a trek package, remove any separately priced road leg already included, rather than paying for the same pickup twice.

Get the return car quoted from the actual permitted exit. If the route changes, a Senaru finish price is not automatically a Sembalun finish price. Resolve the Senaru duration conflict with the driver and allow the longer published allowance until the exact journey is agreed.

Rinjani before or after the Gilis?

If you mainly want a trek followed by island time, put the mountain first, then transfer from the confirmed exit to the harbour and your chosen Gili. This avoids placing the ascent after holiday scuba diving. It does not remove the need for a permitted route, preparation or individual health advice.

If you visit the Gilis first, use the following mainland day for the boat, car, equipment check and briefing rather than trying to begin trekking after arrival. Where you sleep depends on the organiser’s actual programme: an advertised Sembalun start can still include a pre-trek hotel and office meeting in Senaru.

Senaru Trekking’s advertised three-day Sembalun-to-Senaru product, for example, separately includes the preceding Senaru hotel night and then a drive to Sembalun. That illustrates how trek-day counts differ from holiday-day counts; its Senaru finish must not be read as currently authorised given the park notice. Its demanding schedule is not reproduced here as a safe ascent prescription.

Senaru Trekking: advertised three-day programme and pre-trek night

Allow preparation and onward time outside the advertised trek days

Keep four distinct blocks in the holiday: mainland arrival/preparation; the actually permitted trekking programme; flexible descent and onward transport; then island nights. A three-day trek does not mean you can leave Air on the first morning and be back at an island hotel at a guaranteed time on the third evening.

After descent, a same-day Gili crossing depends on the real finish time, road journey and a confirmed available boat. Leave the first island night flexible or use a mainland night if those legs cannot be established. Do not book a last public departure against an optimistic mountain finish. An extra night is a logistics allowance, not a medical recovery prescription.

If you do not want a mountain trek, keep the seven- or ten-day Lombok/Gili plan instead. Visiting a village or arranging a separate mainland outing does not require promising a summit, lake or crater-rim visit.

Scuba diving before Rinjani needs specific altitude advice

DAN explains that ascent to altitude after diving increases decompression-sickness risk. Its published 12- and 18-hour flight recommendations have defined dive, symptom and cabin-altitude conditions; they are not a clearance timetable for a Rinjani ascent. Do not substitute “wait overnight” or a generic 24-hour rule for advice based on the actual dives, drive and proposed trek.

Give a qualified diving-medicine professional the final dive profile, date and time, mountain-road travel and planned altitude exposure before arranging both activities. If symptoms suggest decompression illness, seek medical advice rather than travelling uphill. Putting the trek before scuba removes this particular post-dive ascent sequence, but is not a personal fitness guarantee.

What the final trek quote must specify

Require the entrance and exit, each overnight point, daily walking expectations, guide and porter arrangements, equipment, meals, water, pre-trek hotel, transfers and luggage storage. Establish current health-document requirements, the organiser’s emergency communications and evacuation arrangements, and your own insurance’s altitude and activity cover. A permit or bundled local policy does not establish comprehensive personal cover.

No universal current permit total is asserted here: the operator examples disagree on fee units and the park’s booking restriction remains unresolved for a new purchase. Obtain a line-item quote against the actual authorised programme. Choose a shorter objective or skip the extension if the demands, access or insurance do not fit; the beach itinerary does not need a summit to be complete.
