Choose your programme before choosing a dive site
For Gili Islands diving, certified divers should book guided fun dives matched to their certification and recent experience. Beginners need an introductory scuba programme or a certification course, not a seat on a certified-diver trip. All three main islands have local dive operations; moving accommodation is not automatically necessary to reach sites around another Gili.
Choose your overnight island for the stay you want, then compare the actual dive-day format. Manta Trawangan returns to its centre between regular single-tank dives; Manta Air describes a two-dive outing; Divine Divers offers instruction and fun diving from Meno. These differences affect your day more directly than a generic list of the “best” dive sites.
Trawangan: single-tank trips with a return between dives
Manta Dive Trawangan boards from the beach in front of its centre and describes most sites as a short boat ride away. Its regular guided dives return to the centre between dives, rather than keeping you aboard for a full-day excursion. It advertises a maximum of four divers per guide.
This format suits someone who wants one dive, or a choice of separate dives with land breaks. Bring proof of certification. The operator asks about diving within the last 12 months and may recommend a refresher if you have been out of the water or feel rusty; an advanced certification does not replace that recent-experience conversation.
Manta Dive Trawangan: guided format, group size and prerequisitesAir: compare the two-dive outing with your other plans
Manta Dive Gili Air describes guided boat diving, generally as a two-dive trip with an additional single dive during busy periods. Its page asks new arrivals to visit the day before for paperwork and the next day’s schedule. Do not arrive from Bali assuming you can go straight from the passenger boat to a dive departure.
The Air operation describes drift dives with boat pickup after the dive. Its introductory text and later paragraph give different group-size wording, so this guide does not promote one fixed Air ratio. Obtain the actual group arrangement and day format for your booking rather than transferring Trawangan’s four-per-guide offer to Air.
Manta Dive Gili Air: trip format, drift pickup and prior-day check-inMeno: stay on the island and use a Meno-based centre
Divine Divers advertises introduction dives, courses and certified fun diving from its northwest Meno location. It places the centre across the island from the harbour. A Meno stay can therefore include local diving without commuting to a Trawangan meeting point every morning.
Choose this arrangement if Meno is the island you want outside the water. Account for the land journey from your room or arrival landing to the centre. A dive-and-stay package is an accommodation and activity offer, not a guarantee that every named reef will be available on your dates.
Divine Divers: Meno location and advertised dive programmesFirst dive, certification course or refresher?
An introduction is for trying scuba under supervision; it does not give you an Open Water qualification. Manta Trawangan’s Discover Scuba programme combines basic theory, pool skills, a briefing and one instructor-led ocean dive, with a stated maximum depth of 12 metres. Its entry requirements include being at least 10, comfortable in water and completing the medical questionnaire. These are that operator’s programme conditions, not personal clearance.
Choose a full certification course when earning the qualification is the purpose of the trip, and reserve its complete teaching schedule before fixing onward travel. Already-certified divers returning after a break should discuss a refresher instead of buying an introductory product or assuming a normal fun dive will include skills coaching.
Manta Dive: Discover Scuba format, prerequisites and non-certification statusPublished costs: compare what the operator actually includes
Manta Trawangan’s IDR table checked on 25 October 2026 lists IDR 640,000 for one fun dive, IDR 576,000 per dive for three to four dives, and IDR 790,000 for a night dive. The regular fun-dive description includes guided boat diving and rental gear; computers and cameras cost extra. Night diving remains subject to conditions and scheduling.
Its FAQ separately lists a Rp100,000 Marine Park Fee paid once per calendar year. Treat that as the operator’s stated additional charge, not an independently verified universal statutory fee. Ask how an existing payment is recorded if you already paid elsewhere. Do not assume the headline dive rate is the total payable.
Manta Dive Trawangan: IDR price table, equipment and separate feeIntroductory scuba has a different price basis
Manta Trawangan’s visible Discover Scuba FAQ lists IDR 1,350,000 for its introduction, plus the separately stated Rp100,000 park payment. The programme includes teaching and a pool session as well as one ocean dive, so it is not comparable to the certified-diver single-dive rate. Optional photography is another purchase.
These are dated published prices, not a live quotation or an island-wide tariff. Air and Meno bookings need their own total and inclusion list. No affiliate relationship or paid recommendation is implied by the operator examples.
Manta Dive: introduction price, scope and additional paymentClear visibility does not mean easy conditions
Do not choose dates on the assumption that the dry season makes every reef calm or the water uniformly warm. Divine Divers’ September 2026 report, published on 23 October, records water around 26°C at times and unusually strong currents alongside very clear visibility. Those are observations for that period, not a forecast for your trip.
Use your certification, experience and the day’s conditions to agree site selection with the dive team. A deeper wreck, wall or drift is not automatically suitable because another guest has booked it. Keep spare time in the stay if a particular programme matters; a fixed wildlife sighting or guaranteed site cannot be promised.
Divine Divers: September 2026 conditions reportLeave time before flights and high-altitude travel
Diving affects more than the next ferry. Divers Alert Network explains that reduced pressure during flight increases decompression-sickness risk. Its published guidance for asymptomatic recreational air divers recommends at least 12 hours before flying after one no-decompression dive, and at least 18 hours after multiple dives in a day or diving on multiple days. Longer intervals reduce risk further; the guidance does not guarantee avoidance.
These minimums are conditional guidelines, not personal medical clearance or a timetable for a Rinjani trek. Tell the dive team about both flights and travel to altitude before booking. Decompression dives need different planning, and anyone with possible decompression symptoms should seek medical advice and avoid flying. Arrange any questionnaire or required medical sign-off before arrival.
Divers Alert Network: flying-after-diving guidance and limitationsWhen snorkelling is the better use of the day
Choose snorkelling if you want a surface-water outing without scuba instruction or if the qualification, medical requirements or onward-flight timing do not fit a dive programme. It has its own swimming, current and supervision requirements; it is not automatically safe because it uses less equipment.
For the Meno statues, compare a shore assessment with a boat that boards on your overnight island rather than booking scuba solely because Nest appears on a tour list. Keep wildlife viewing unhurried and do not touch animals, coral or the sculptures.
