Best time to visit the Gili Islands: weather and boat seasons

Start with May, June or September if your dates are flexible. Compare the drier months, busy sailing periods and rainy-season disruption before fixing your island nights.

Which months should you choose?

For a beach-focused trip with flexible dates, our starting recommendation is May, June or September. These sit within the broadly drier part of the year and outside July and August, which BlueWater identifies within its peak sailing season. This is a planning recommendation, not a promise of sunshine, calm water or cheaper rooms.

Choose July or August if those are your available holiday dates, but secure the room and crossing you actually want before building activities around them. November to March can work for a flexible stay; it is a less suitable choice for a short island break with an immovable flight immediately afterward.

Your decisionWhat the window offersWhat to allow for
May–JuneA useful first choice within the broadly drier season.A dry-season label does not establish sea conditions or a safe swimming site.
July–SeptemberDry-season travel with increased BlueWater capacity during its July–September peak period.Book your chosen crossing; September is still within that operator’s peak period, not a guaranteed quiet month.
April and OctoberPossible options around the broad wet/dry transition. The seasonal boundary shifts by year and location; do not assume the first day of the month changes the weather.
November–MarchAn option when you can change outdoor days and transport plans.Rainy-season cancellations; Christmas and New Year can still be busy.

Climate is not the forecast for your dates

Indonesia Tourism describes a broad April–October dry season and November–March wet season for much of Indonesia, while explicitly warning about regional variation and less predictable seasons. Use that as an orientation rather than a precise Gili rainfall calendar.

BMKG’s NTB station publishes regional seasonal bulletins. Its September 2026 bulletin predicts a later-than-normal start to the 2026/27 rains, with onset across the province’s seasonal zones from late November through late December. That is a dated regional prediction, not a forecast that your Gili beach will stay dry until December. For a later trip, use the newer bulletin rather than recycling that prediction.

Rainy-season boats: what actually changes

Ekajaya warns that weather cancellations can occur, especially in January–March. It says departures need harbour-master clearance based on weather and sea conditions. BlueWater also reserves the right to cancel or change sailings for weather and safety. Neither a sunny forecast at your hotel nor a paid ticket guarantees that the crossing will operate.

Do not place the final boat immediately before a separately booked flight. A mainland or Bali overnight before the flight is a practical buffer, not a guarantee against a prolonged closure. If you have only one spare night, spending it on the mainland can be more useful than adding another island stop.

Check the seasonal timetable, not a summer screenshot

BlueWater’s published October pattern has two Serangan departures, while its November–April section lists one at 09:00 via Padang Bai. The website’s general “two trips daily” wording therefore does not describe every seasonal table. Use the section for your travel month and confirm the offered departure before paying.

Christmas and New Year do not automatically mean low-season availability: BlueWater lists them among its busy periods. Bali’s Nyepi also affects access even though your hotel is on a different island. BlueWater currently lists no trips on 9 March 2027; that is its published closure, not a substitute for checking another operator’s arrangements.

Snorkeling and diving need a daily conditions decision

If time in the water is the main reason for the trip, leave more than one possible activity day. A month label cannot establish the current, visibility or suitability of an individual site, and dry-season weather is not permission to swim between islands. Agree the day’s site and passenger needs with the responsible local operator rather than buying a guaranteed-visibility promise.

Before a crossing, open BMKG’s maritime forecasts and warnings. The service includes Perairan Utara P. Lombok (waters north of Lombok); Bali routes also cross other forecast areas. Read the validity period and the areas covered by your route. Forecasts inform the plan; the operator and harbour authorities decide whether a sailing can proceed.

Turn the month into a workable stay

Once you have a travel window, count arrival and departure as travel days. A three-day stay with two nights normally leaves one full island day. If boats or an activity move, a tightly packed island-hopping plan has little room to recover.

Choose a two-, three- or four-day Gili itinerary

Match the season to your crossing

Compare the actual Bali departure port, island landing and operator terms before selecting a ticket. Travelling through Lombok still requires a local boat leg; it does not remove weather dependence.
