Gili Islands for families: choosing an island and planning the trip

Start with Gili Air for a quieter family base, compare Meno for a smaller setting and Trawangan for more evening choice. The transfer, room layout and access to medical care matter as much as the island.

Which Gili island is best for families?

Gili Air is a useful first choice for families who want a quieter base than Trawangan without making the trip about complete seclusion. Choose Gili Meno if the smallest island and a quieter stay are the main attraction. Trawangan can work for families who want its restaurants and activities, but its nightlife makes the exact hotel location especially important. These are planning recommendations, not guarantees that every room on Air or Meno will be quiet.

With babies or young children, choose one island rather than moving hotels between all three. Every move adds packing, a boat boarding and another transfer from the landing point. A room that suits naps and meals is more useful than collecting island stops.

Your decisionWhy choose itWhat to weigh up
Gili AirA quieter alternative to Trawangan; the island closest to mainland Lombok.Pick the room location and arrival transfer first. Closest to Lombok does not mean immediate access to a hospital.
Gili MenoThe smallest island, with the most remote-feeling setting of the three. Some Bali operators require an additional local boat. A quieter setting is not proof of better swimming conditions.
Gili TrawanganThe largest island, with a broader choice of restaurants, bars and evening venues.Avoid choosing by island name alone if early bedtimes matter; establish the room’s position relative to music venues.

Choose a room, not just a “family-friendly” label

On Gili Air, Sunrise Resort is a concrete example to investigate: it advertises a separate kids pool, air-conditioned rooms and a beach setting. Its published Signature Suite and Deluxe Room descriptions both state a maximum of three people. A family of four should not assume either category accommodates everyone just because the hotel markets itself to families. Get the exact occupancy and bedding arrangement agreed before paying.

The Signature Suite has an upstairs roof terrace; the Deluxe description places rooms beside the pools. For a mobile toddler, stairs, terrace access and an unfenced route to water deserve more attention than room size. Ask for a current layout or photographs of the actual room access, cot arrangement and pool barriers. The hotel’s kids-pool description does not establish that a lifeguard or childcare is provided.

Arriving from Bali with children

Book the boat to the island where you will sleep. BlueWater Express lists Trawangan and Air but not a direct Meno stop; its advice for Meno involves a local boat from another island. Ekajaya lists Meno as a destination, but its terms describe shuttle transfers between the harbour and the ferry for Meno and Air. A ticket bearing your island’s name does not always mean staying on one vessel all the way to shore.

Before buying, give the operator each child’s age and ask about the child-sized lifejacket, infant seating and the actual boarding arrangement for that sailing. The presence of an infant category in a booking form does not answer those questions. Keep essential medication, feeding supplies, a change of clothes and sun protection in your hand luggage rather than the bag loaded separately.

If anyone is pregnant or has a significant heart or back condition, read the operator’s restrictions and get individual medical advice before choosing a fast boat. Both BlueWater and Ekajaya warn against travel for some of these passengers. Signing a disclaimer does not make the crossing medically suitable.

Would flying to Lombok be easier?

Flying into Lombok replaces the longer Bali sea leg with an airport arrival, a road journey to the northwest coast and a shorter final crossing. It does not remove boat travel. Compare the whole chain, including the flight, baggage collection, car seats, road transfer, boarding and arrival at the room, rather than comparing flight time with sailing time.

This can be worth considering if a long sea journey is the main difficulty, but it is not automatically the quicker or safer option for a particular child. A late landing may also leave you needing a mainland overnight stop rather than a rushed island transfer.

Getting from the landing point to your room

Indonesia Tourism describes walking, bicycles and horse carts as the island transport options, rather than ordinary car or motorbike transfers. BlueWater’s hotel pickup service is in Bali, not on the Gilis. Arrange the arrival plan with your accommodation so that one adult is not left juggling bags and children while the other looks for transport.

For a pushchair, establish the route from the landing point to the room, including any sand or steps; do not assume the island path works like a paved promenade. A compact pushchair can still be useful at the hotel, but it does not settle the luggage-transfer problem. If you prefer not to use a horse cart, choose accommodation with a manageable walk and arrange luggage help in advance.

Plan shade and swimming separately

Build the day around a short morning outing, a shaded or indoor break and another outing later, rather than an all-day boat trip by default. Keep the arrival afternoon free of prepaid activities so that a delay does not also lose your first family excursion.

The NHS advises keeping babies under six months out of direct sunlight and older babies out of the sun as much as possible. Use a proper pushchair sunshade rather than covering the pram with a blanket, which can cause overheating. For babies aged six months or more, its guidance is sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with UVA and UVB protection, reapplied regularly and after swimming. Follow age-appropriate feeding and hydration advice rather than giving an infant the same drinking routine as an older child.

A kids pool is not supervised childcare

Assign an adult to supervise young children whenever they are in or beside water; an older sibling or flotation toy is not a replacement. Choose accommodation where you can control a toddler’s access to the pool, not simply see it from the terrace. NHS guidance stresses that drowning can be silent and young children need watching near water.

This guide does not identify a Gili beach or snorkeling site as safe for children. A photograph of shallow water is not evidence of the currents, boat traffic or conditions when you arrive. If a snorkeling outing is important, use a qualified local provider to assess the particular site and your child’s swimming ability that day. A pool-and-beach stay does not need a snorkeling excursion to justify the trip.

Know where you would seek medical help

Blue Island Clinic lists branches on all three islands: at Villa Ombak Hotel on Trawangan, 50 metres from Meno harbour and 100 metres from Air harbour. Its published branch numbers are +62 81 999 705 701 for Trawangan, +62 81 999 705 702 for Meno and +62 81 999 705 703 for Air. Save the relevant number and location before travel. These are provider-listed contacts, not a verified emergency response-time promise.

An island clinic is not proof of round-the-clock paediatric specialist care or hospital treatment. For a child with an ongoing condition, establish the care and referral arrangements before booking. If the required care cannot be confirmed, choose a destination with suitable facilities rather than relying on a quick evacuation.

Insurance and the trip home

FCDO advises checking that your destination can provide the healthcare you may need and carrying insurance for treatment and unexpected evacuation. It warns that serious illness or injury may not be treatable in remote areas. Keep the insurer’s assistance details accessible and disclose existing conditions when arranging cover.

For a Bali departure, return from the Gilis the day before the flight rather than spending the family’s last day trying to connect a boat, a road transfer and an airport check-in. BlueWater recommends travelling the day before a homebound flight, and Ekajaya advises at least a 24-hour buffer before onward travel. A spare night reduces connection pressure but does not guarantee that weather disruption will last only one day.

How many nights should you allow?

Three nights on one island is a useful starting plan if you want two full days between arrival and departure. That is an editorial pacing suggestion, not a minimum stay rule. Use one full day for the beach and pool near your accommodation, and keep the second flexible for a short outing or more rest.

If you only have one island night, both days include transfers. Staying put on Bali or Lombok may be a better family decision than adding a crossing for a very short visit.
