Gili Islands guide: Trawangan, Meno and Air

Trawangan, Meno and Air sit off northwest Lombok. The Secret Gilis are a separate island group near Sekotong. Start with the right coast, then choose your next guide.

Two groups, different starting points

The Gili Islands most travellers mean are Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, off northwest Lombok in Indonesia. From west to east they are Trawangan, Meno and Air; Air is closest to mainland Lombok. Choose one as your overnight base, then match your boat ticket to that island.

Trawangan suits a trip built around restaurants and nightlife. Meno is the smallest and the quieter small-island choice. Air offers a quieter alternative to Trawangan with east-facing sunrise and west-facing sunset coasts. You can visit sites off another island without moving hotels.

The northwest trio

Trawangan
The largest of the three, with the broader nightlife scene. Begin here if restaurants and evenings out shape your island choice.
Meno
The smallest of the three. Indonesia Tourism describes a quieter, more remote-feeling alternative to Trawangan.
Air
Closest to mainland Lombok, with a quieter island setting than Trawangan. Compare its east-coast morning outlook and west-coast sunset before choosing a room.

The Secret Gilis are near Sekotong

Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak and Gili Kedis belong to a different group off southwest Lombok. Indonesia Tourism places them around Sekotong Barat and describes access via Tawun. They are not extra stops that every Trawangan–Meno–Air boat automatically includes.

A tour labelled “three Gilis” could refer to either group. Look for the three actual island names and the departure location. Keep a Sekotong excursion separate from a northwest-island stay unless your proposed journey explicitly connects the two.

Which Gili island should you choose?

Begin with Trawangan if evening venues are a priority, Meno if the smallest setting appeals, or Air if you want a quieter base and a choice of coastal outlooks. Then compare the exact room location and distance from your arrival point. The island comparison explains the differences without treating an entire island as uniformly quiet.

Getting to the Gili Islands

From Bali, compare a fast boat from Padang Bai or Serangan. From Lombok, plan a road transfer to the coast followed by a boat to your chosen island. Flying to Lombok does not remove the final crossing. Neither a Bali hotel pickup nor a mainland harbour is the endpoint of the island journey.

How long should you stay?

Two island days mean one night, with transfers taking part of each day. Three days give you one full day between arrival and departure; four days give you two. A single Air base avoids packing and changing hotels during a short visit.

Start with a coast on Air

For a Gili Air stay, compare the east beach for sunrise towards Lombok and the west for sunset. If luggage or mobility is the deciding factor, put the landing point and the route to your room ahead of the outlook.
