Lombok’s Secret Gilis: Nanggu, Gede, Asahan and Layar

The Secret Gilis are not one extra island beside Air

For a southwest Lombok extension, choose Nanggu and nearby island stops for a boat excursion, Gili Gede for an island base with a scheduled fast-boat connection, or Asahan for a lodge stay with a final local boat. Layar is an excursion option within the southwest group, not a stop on the regular Trawangan–Air passenger route.

“Secret Gilis” is a travel label, not a single ferry destination. These islands lie around Sekotong in southwest Lombok. Trawangan, Meno and Air are off the northwest coast. Gili Kondo is in East Lombok and belongs to a different excursion area. Put the exact island name on every car, boat and accommodation request.

Nanggu: use Tawun for a southwest boat day

Indonesia Travel describes a road journey to Sekotong followed by a motorboat from Tawun, giving an approximate 1.5-hour airport road leg and 15-minute boat leg. Treat these as orientation estimates for that excursion area, not arrival times for every island in Sekotong.

For a day trip, keep Nanggu and the named nearby stops together and return to the agreed mainland landing before your onward car journey. The tourism page includes Sudak and Kedis in its island-hopping description. Ask for the stop list in the quote: a long list of “Secret Gilis” on a sales page does not make every island part of one practical day.

For an overnight stay, obtain the actual accommodation confirmation before buying the transfers. The tourism page’s starting room amount is not a date-specific rate, so it is not reproduced as a current nightly budget. Its shallow-water descriptions are also not a swimming-safety assessment for your visit.

Gede: distinguish fast-boat jetty from local hotel landing

Gili Getaway’s route tables checked on 25 October 2026 list Gili Gede connections with Serangan, Nusa Penida, Senggigi, Trawangan, Air and Bangsal. Gede can therefore fit between a northwest Gili stay and southwest accommodation without treating it as an unserved island. The exact direction, date and final hotel transfer still matter.

As starting-fare examples, the operator lists Trawangan or Air to Gede from IDR 650,000, Senggigi to Gede from IDR 550,000 and Serangan to Gede from IDR 960,000. These are the carrier’s published starting fares, not fixed quotes or evidence that seats remain. Its route line does not include Meno, Nanggu, Layar or Asahan as scheduled stops.

For mainland access, Signature Scuba describes Tembowong harbour, a taxi-boat counter and a short boat trip specifically to its Gede beachfront. Its local boat amount applies to that described service; it is not a fare for all Gede hotels. The same operator names Kokomo Resort’s main jetty for meeting arriving fast-boat guests. Give your accommodation the booked boat and arrival jetty so it can arrange the right final leg.

Asahan: budget the extra boat, not just the Gede ticket

Gili Asahan Eco Lodge says it can arrange Gede–Asahan transfers taking approximately 25 minutes. Its published charge is IDR 400,000 per boat each way for up to four passengers, plus IDR 50,000 for each additional passenger above four, shared by the group and added to the room bill. That is the lodge’s transfer arrangement, not a public passenger fare.

A return transfer for a group of up to four therefore adds IDR 800,000 before the separate long-distance tickets. Book both local legs with the lodge, including the return meeting time at Gede; do not assume the long-distance carrier waits for your local boat.

The lodge lists room types, an onsite restaurant and activities, and states that it has no pool. Choose it if a property-based island stay is what you want, rather than expecting Air’s range of easily interchangeable evening venues. Its boat-request form is only a request: the lodge says Gili Getaway must confirm availability and payment instructions.

Layar and Kondo answer different excursion questions

For Layar, a named southwest example is Iwan Lombok Tours’ excursion to Layar, Gede and Rengit. Its page is aimed at cruise visitors and varies departure around the ship’s tender time. Do not apply that pickup pattern to an independent traveller staying on Air. For an independent visit, obtain a southwest departure arrangement and return landing rather than going to Bangsal with only the word “Gili.”

Kondo is not the final stop after Layar. Feel Lombok’s separate East Lombok programme names Kapal, Petagan, Bidara and Kondo, includes car and private boat transport, and warns that the drive is long. Its stops can change with tide and current, including the Kapal sandbar. That is a separate full-day decision, not a small addition to a Sekotong afternoon.

Neither tour description proves that snorkelling is suitable for every swimmer, or that a sandbar, reef condition or wildlife sighting is guaranteed on your date. Arrange the activity around the actual participants and local conditions; do not use promotional “calm water” wording as clearance.

Combine the southwest with the Gilis without overloading the trip

For one southwest day, stay on mainland Lombok and arrange one named excursion rather than changing hotels just to visit every island. For an overnight extension, two nights on Gede or Asahan is a useful editorial starting point: arrival, a full local day, then departure. It is a pacing suggestion, not a hotel minimum stay or a guarantee of two sailings.

Coming from Trawangan or Air, compare the confirmed Gili Getaway passage to Gede against a boat back to mainland Lombok followed by a separately quoted road-and-local-boat transfer. From Meno, do not assume that the carrier’s Trawangan/Air listing includes your island. For Nanggu, use the Tawun excursion arrangement; a Gede booking is not an interchangeable way to reach every southwest island.

For November–March, resolve the published service discrepancy before building nights around a sailing: Gili Getaway’s overview says daily, while Signature Scuba’s partner notice excludes Fridays and Sundays in that period. Its October 2026 note says daily. Retain the actual dated confirmation rather than treating either headline as a year-round guarantee.

Add accommodation, meals, road travel, each local boat, long-distance tickets and excursion inclusions separately. Keep your flight day off a chain of two unprotected boats where possible; a mainland night reduces one dependency but does not eliminate disruption risk.
