Ubud to the Gili Islands: pickup, Padang Bai and boat times

Travel by road from Ubud to Padang Bai, then by fast boat to your chosen Gili island. Allow for hotel pickup, harbour check-in and island stops; the sailing time is only part of the journey.

The usual route is through Padang Bai

From Ubud, start by comparing a road transfer to Padang Bai followed by a fast boat to Gili Trawangan, Gili Air or Gili Meno. Ubud is inland: there is no boat departure from Ubud itself. A ticket sold as “Ubud to Gili” is a combined land-and-sea arrangement or a boat ticket with an optional transfer.

BlueWater Express recommends Padang Bai for central Bali, including Ubud, and Serangan for south Bali. Driving south to Serangan is therefore not the default for an Ubud stay. It can still suit a particular confirmed sailing, but compare the complete pickup-to-arrival schedule before accepting it.

Do not confuse drive time with the pickup window

BlueWater’s FAQ describes roughly an hour from central Bali to Padang Bai after the last guests have been picked up for an early departure. That is not a promise that the hotel pickup is an hour before sailing. Its current schedule terms put Ubud pickup approximately three hours before a Padang Bai departure. The difference allows for the pickup operation, traffic and the harbour process.

Use the written collection time for your exact accommodation. A villa outside the central pickup area, a meeting-point collection or your own private driver changes the road arrangement. BlueWater asks for pickup details at least 24 hours ahead. Do not wait until the departure morning to provide the hotel address.

What the example does and does not include

The example uses BlueWater’s published October route: Padang Bai at 12:15, Trawangan at 13:45 and Air at 14:20. The 09:15 pickup is calculated from its approximate Ubud pickup guidance; it is not a reserved collection time. The elapsed times stop at scheduled landing, not at your hotel door. Add unloading and the transfer to your room, and allow for road or sea delays. All timetable times are local WITA, UTC+8.

Do not use this example as a year-round timetable. The same operator’s November–April table instead shows Padang Bai at 10:15, Trawangan at 11:45 and Air at 12:20. Its July–September tables also include an 08:00 Padang Bai service that is not listed in the October or November–April tables. Choose the table for the travel month and then confirm that date’s available sailing. A heading saying “two trips daily” does not override the actual seasonal route entries.

Choose Trawangan, Air or Meno on the booking

For Trawangan, select Gili Trawangan rather than Bangsal on mainland Lombok. For Air, allow for the intermediate stops shown on the route: in the October example the same boat reaches Air 35 minutes after its Trawangan arrival. “Bali to Gili” does not identify your final landing point.

For Meno, the operator choice changes the journey. BlueWater does not list a Meno landing and directs Meno guests to a local boat from Trawangan or Air. Ekajaya lists Meno as a destination, but its terms describe a shuttle between the harbour and ferry for Meno and Air. Establish how many boardings your chosen service involves, particularly with children, heavy bags or limited mobility. Buying the shortest advertised crossing is not useful if it ends on the wrong island.

Compare fast-boat operators and island stops

Compare an operator transfer with a separate driver

BlueWater advertises land transfers covering Ubud and coordinates them with its boat departures. Ekajaya advertises private and shared Bali harbour shuttles for an additional charge. Its FAQ says a private vehicle can take up to four passengers, while recommending a maximum of three for comfort; its shared option lists up to three passengers with at most one additional pickup or drop-off stop. These are service descriptions, not confirmation that your villa is included.

An operator-arranged pickup gives you one contact for the road and boat arrangements. A separate driver gives you control of the collection point and stops, but you must set an arrival time that clears the ferry check-in deadline. BlueWater’s last check-in is 30 minutes before departure; Ekajaya says check-in opens an hour before and closes 30 minutes before. Aim to be there for opening rather than treating the last possible minute as the target.

Ekajaya: shuttle types, capacity and location-based pricing

What should an Ubud-to-Gili quote include?

Compare the total for the same date, passengers and destination island: the Ubud road leg, boat seats, any separately collected harbour or island charges, and any local boat needed for Meno. Then add the arrival transfer to the accommodation. A boat-only fare is not a door-to-door Ubud price.

There is no single verified year-round fare for this journey. Ekajaya explicitly states that ticket prices vary with season, availability and promotions, and that shuttle prices depend on location. BlueWater’s land-transport page links a rate sheet labelled May 2025; use it as background, not proof of today’s total. Get a dated quote with the pickup address and each inclusion written down. This guide does not treat a low advertised boat fare as the full trip cost.

BlueWater Express: Ubud land-transfer service

The final leg is not a car transfer

Once you land, ordinary hotel car pickup is not the Gili arrival model. BlueWater provides hotel transfers in Bali, not on the islands. Send your accommodation the boat name, island landing point and expected arrival so you can plan a walk, luggage assistance or an agreed horse-cart transfer if you want one.

Keep the first island afternoon flexible. A scheduled lunchtime arrival is not a sound basis for a tightly timed paid activity immediately after check-in.

Planning the return to Ubud or the airport

You can return to Ubud after the islands without choosing the same Bali port for both directions. Compare the return sailing’s actual port, onward road transfer and stops rather than assuming a return ticket retraces the outward trip.

If your next commitment is a flight from Bali, leave the islands the day before. BlueWater recommends that buffer, and Ekajaya advises at least 24 hours before onward travel. Boats can be cancelled or delayed and the road leg adds its own uncertainty; a same-day evening flight is not a protected connection.
